The drums can be one of the most fun yet most challenging instruments to learn. Most students find it very hard to balance their practice and focus between learning rudiments and playing the fun drum set grooves. In the Van Tuyl Music Academy Drum Program, our goal is to find that balance for you. Any professional musician will tell you that a great band with an average drummer is an average band, but an average band with a great drummer is a great band. This is why a portion of each lesson is invested with a metronome learning stick control, hand coordination, and rudiments. However, the majority of every lesson is spent on the drum set learning beats, coordination, fills, and soloing. As always, students are invited to focus on whatever style of music they are most interested in, and learn as many songs as possible, but we always teach them to be well rounded in all styles so they eventually can learn to fuse everything together to create their own unique, exciting drum sound.
